Small Works Engineer – Fire Industry
Working within the Small Works team, you will handle planned minor installation projects, including the upgrade and extension of existing fire alarm systems, as well as smaller standalone installations. You’ll be expected to ensure all work is completed to the highest standard and in line with relevant regulations and company procedures.
The role is mobile, primarily covering the Midlands, with occasional travel to surrounding areas. Projects will vary in size and complexity, requiring a flexible and proactive approach.
A company van, tools, laptop, and phone will be provided to support you in your role.

5. PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS / WORK EXPERIENCE |
|
· NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Fire Alarm Systems / Electrical Installation · BAFE SP203-1 certification (or working towards) · FIA (Fire Industry Association) Training Certificates, including: · Fundamentals of Fire Detection & Alarm Systems · Design, Installation, Maintenance, and Commissioning modules · 17th/18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) · CSCS/ECS Card (relevant discipline) · IPAF / PASMA / Asbestos Awareness / Working at Height · Full UK Driving Licence (essential for mobile roles) · SSSTS / SMSTS (beneficial for those managing sites or leading teams)
Key Skills
· Strong understanding of BS 5839 Part 1 (fire alarm system design, installation, and commissioning) · Ability to install, modify, and commission a variety of addressable and conventional fire alarm systems (e.g. Gent, Advanced, Kentec, Morley, C-Tec) · Confident with cable containment (tray, trunking, conduit) and general electrical works related to fire alarm installations · Proficient in interpreting system designs, drawings, and technical specifications · Capable of working to deadlines and managing small-scale projects independently or as part of a team · Clear communicator with client-facing skills · Strong problem-solving and fault-finding abilities · Competent in completing electronic job sheets, commissioning certificates, and as-fitted drawings · Awareness of health and safety regulations and site compliance procedures
Relevant Work Experience
· Minimum 3–5 years' experience working with fire alarm systems, preferably in small works or projects · Demonstrable experience with installation, upgrades, and commissioning of fire detection systems across commercial, industrial, or residential sites
· Experience working with main contractors, site managers, and other trades on live construction or refurbishment sites · Previous experience using laptops, commissioning tools, and diagnostic software to configure and test systems · Experience in client liaison, attending site meetings, and producing basic reports or documentation · Familiarity with other life safety systems such as emergency lighting, AOVs, and fire extinguishers (optional, but advantageous)
